PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots defeated crosstown rival Portland State by a 5-2 margin on Friday in a non-conference women's tennis match at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center. Portland improves to 2-2 with the win, while the Vikings drop to 1-3 this spring.
Portland opened by claiming the doubles point with wins at the top two positions. Jana Tanevska and Angela Schuster won 6-0 at No. 2 doubles and then Jelena Lukic and Neli Sunjic clinched with a 6-2 win at the No. 1 position.
The Pilots then won the top four singles matches to secure the win. Lukic cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win at the top of the lineup against Jacinta Milenkoski.
Emily Soares beat Nina Nikitovic by a 6-3, 6-4 margin at No. 3 singles and then Sunjic clinched the team victory with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles against Lotti Meszaros.
Marija Elenova tallied Portland's final point with a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Eszter Zador at No. 4 singles.
The Vikings took the final two matches with Alli Valk and Emily Rees winning in straight sets at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
The Pilots will next take the court for a pair of non-conference matches against Montana and Montana State in Missoula, Mont. at the Peak Racquet Club. Portland and host Montana meet on Friday, March 6 at noon (PST) and then the Pilots will take on Montana State on Saturday, March 7 at 9 a.m. (PST).
