RIDGEFIELD, Wash. --- Portland freshman Sean Mulcare belted the go-ahead homer in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Pilots were solid on the mound as they completed a three-game sweep of the Nevada Wolf Pack with a 6-4 win on Sunday afternoon at the Ridgefield Outdoor Recreation Complex.
Â
The homer is Mulcare's second during the weekend, and it came with the score tied 4-4 in the sixth. With one out and the bases empty, Mulcare cleared the right field fence with a hard-hit, line drive.
A few batters later, Hunter Montgomery sent a single through the left side that brought home Tracye Tammaro, who had previously doubled, and the Pilots had a two-run cushion.
Â
The Portland bullpen did the rest as relievers Nick Nygard, Peter Allegro, and Connor Knutson held the Wolf Pack scoreless, while allowing just two hits during the final 4.2 innings. Nygard (1-0) gets his first win after striking out two in 1.2 innings.
Â
Allegro tossed a flawless top of the seventh, and Knutson took care of the final two innings to notch his first save of the year and the 19th of his career. Knutson is now just five saves shy of matching the program's all-time record in that category.
Â
After the Wolf Pack took an early lead with a three-run homer from Dillan Shrum, the Pilots answered with two runs in the home half of the inning. Travis Turney brought in the first run with a fielder's choice, and Henry Cheney followed with an RBI single to right field. The Pilot then surged in front, courtesy a two-run error in the second inning. The left fielder couldn't handle a fly ball off the bat of Tracye Tammaro, and the miscue allowed two runners to score to make it a 4-3 game.
Â
Now with the lead, Portland starter Wyatt Stanley settled down on the mound, and during one stretch he retired eight straight batters, which included three strike outs.
Â
But in the top of the fifth inning, Nevada's Marco Valenzuela left the yard with a solo shot to level the score 4-4.
Â
An inning later the Pilots re-claimed the lead on Mulcare's blast.
Â
Nevada (0-3) used six pitchers on the day, with the loss going to reliever Jake Fenn (0-1).
Â
Stanley tossed 4.1 innings in his first start with the Pilots, and the righty allowed the four runs on three hits. He struck out four.
Â
Next week the Pilots host the Utah Valley Wolverines for a four-game series at Ron Tonkin Field in Hillsboro. The series begins with a 1 p.m. game on Thursday afternoon.
