SEATTLE, Wash.---Portland's men's and women's track teams concluded a very successful weekend at the MPSF Championships on Saturday at Dempsey Indoor, including two new program records set by George Duggan from the men's team and Tara Fuiten from the women's side.
Â
In the men's mile, George Duggan kept up quite a fast pace for the entire run, winning the event in 3:59.61 for a new personal best, and breaking the previous school record set by Logan Orndorf last year. Caleb Webb also competed well, collecting ninth-place overall in 4:04.44, and claiming the tenth best time in Portland history in the men's indoor mile.
"A tremendous meet! Wow! said men's head coach Rob Conner. "I'm just super proud of the team supporting each other so well and to see them mob George at the finish line was a pretty special moment. I'm not sure I have ever seen a scene like that at a track meet. Really cool!"
Â
In the men's 800 meter run, Aiden Fitzgerald's time of 1:53.96 was good for fifth-place in the UP record books, while he collected 17
th place individually at the meet.
Â
It was Justin Hazell who crossed the line first for Portland in the men's 3K, garnering second place in 7:59.05, a time which puts him in sixth-place all-time in the event.
"We got some huge performances especially George winning and Evert and Justin bringing home seconds. Evert really had an impressive weekend placing in the 5000 and 3000" said Conner. "We actually scored more points than any other team when you look at the distance events, mile, 3000 and 5000, which is pretty fantastic!"
Â
For the women, Tara Fuiten continued on her hot streak this season, breaking the school record in the 400m dash with her new personal record of 57.43.
Â
Then in the women's 3K, Anna Pataki and Stella Gillman both collected PRs, of 9:20.15 and 9:23.41, respectively, which puts Pataki in third-place all time in the event, and Gillman in fifth-place.
"Tara had a great race to break the indoor school record," said women's head coach Ian Solof. "Anna and Stella both ran big PRs, with Anna nearly winning the whole thing. Lots of good racing and overall a great day for the team."
Â
The Pilots will next compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., on Friday, March 13
th, and Saturday, March, 14
th. Â
"This caps off the best indoor season in Pilot history" added Conner. "No time to rest but we will take a few days of rest over spring break before gearing up for outdoors!"
