SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Portland fell to San Diego 88-81 in double overtime on Saturday in a West Coast Conference basketball game at Jenny Craig Pavilion. The game featured 12 ties and 11 lead changes as Portland had the lead late in both regulation and first overtime period, but the Toreros made plays and pulled away in double OT.
JoJo Walker led the Pilots (9-17, 1-10 WCC) with 19 points, five rebounds and four assists. Tahirou Diabate finished with 16 points and seven rebounds, but was limited to 16 minutes and fouled out in the first overtime.
Isaiah White had 15 points, Chase Adams finished with 11 and Theo Akwuba added 10 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.
Braun Hartfield scored a game-high 23 points to pace the Toreros (9-17, 2-9) and Yauhen Massalski added a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds. Joey Calcaterra scored 19 points, including numerous clutch baskets late.
Calcaterra forced overtime with a contested three-pointer with 3.8 seconds left in regulation. He then benefitted from a lucky bounce on a three to give San Diego a 79-76 lead in double overtime and the Pilots were unable to come back as the lead grew.
Trailing 30-22 at halftime, the Pilots erupted in the second half behind the strong play of Walker. The junior guard caught fire as Portland scored 35 points in the first nine minutes after halftime to take a 51-46 lead. Walker scored 10 points and dished out a pair of assists during the run.
The spurt continued with a pair of layups from White to push Portland ahead 57-50, but San Diego answered with a 7-0 run out of a timeout to tie the game.
The teams traded leads and baskets as White came up with two more big shots. Adams then found Akwuba for a layup and 65-63 lead with 2:46 remaining.
USD tied it with a Massalski layup, but Diabate was fouled with 43.6 seconds left and made both free throws to make it 67-65. Portland came up with a big defensive stop as Takiula Fahrensohn battled in the paint and grabbed the rebound. He was fouled and missed the front end of the 1-and-1, but redeemed himself by drawing a charge on the ensuing possession with 14.0 seconds on the clock.
Fahrensohn made 1-of-2 free throws to set up Calcaterra's overtime-forcing jumper. Adams had a desperation three at the buzzer miss to send it to overtime.
Hartfield opened the overtime period with a three-pointer, but the Pilot defense clamped down and held the Toreros scoreless for the next three minutes. Adams sandwiched a pair of tough runners around a White finish in the lane to give Portland a 74-73 lead, but Hartfield tied it with a free throw and 34 seconds left. White made a nice drive, but his runner missed and the game went to double overtime.
Portland mixed up the lineup as Quincy Ferebee earned his first start of the season and Fahrensohn was also inserted into the starting five.
The Pilots got an early boost off the bench from Akwuba who three blocked shots to his stat line. Akwuba and Diabate combined to go 6-for-7 in the first half, but the rest of the team was just 4-for-24 overall, 2-for-11 from three-point range and did not attempt a free throw before halftime.
Both teams shot 45 percent overall, but USD benefitted by converting 19-of-26 free throws compared to 11-of-16 for the Pilots. The Toreros were 7-of-22 from three-point range and Portland was just 4-for-19.
