STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific Tigers used suffocating defense and a double-double from Jahlil Tripp to record a 75-55 victory over Portland Thursday night in West Coast Conference play at the Spanos Center. Tripp finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while junior guard JoJo Walker scored a game-high 20 points for the Pilots.
The Tigers (20-9, 8-4 WCC) move into third-place in the league standings with the win, while the Pilots (9-18, 1-11) have now lost 10 straight. Pacific defeated Portland by a 65-55 margin at the Chiles Center last month.
A bright spot for Portland was graduate transfer Isaiah White reaching a career milestone. White passed the 1,000-point mark for his NCAA career late in the first half. He entered the game nine points shy of the mark and finished with 12 points for the game. White played two seasons at Maine before transferring to Portland for his final year of eligibility.
The Pilots struggled to find an offensive rhythm against the physical defense from Pacific. Portland shot 41 percent from the field and committed 19 turnovers with just three assists. The Tigers finished at 50 percent overall and gained a 37-21 rebounding edge.
Pacific led 34-24 at the half and then Tripp opened the second half with a personal 7-0 run. Walker responded with five in a row and Tahirou Diabate converted a three-point play to make it 43-34. Another Walker jumper made it a seven-point deficit, but Pacific answered with back-to-back three-pointers and pushed the margin to as much as 26 points late in regulation.
Tripp was 7-for-11 from the field and made all four of his free throws. He added three steals. Broc Finstuen and Pierre Crockwell II added 13 and 10 points, respectively for the Tigers.
Portland will have the weekend off before preparing for its final two home games of the season next week at the Chiles Center. The Pilots welcome Pepperdine on Thursday at 6 p.m. and then Loyola Marymount on Saturday at 7 p.m. Portland will recognize White and fellow graduate transfer Lavar Harewood as part of Senior Day prior to Saturday's tip-off.
