PORTLAND, Ore. – In the interest of the health and safety of all student-athletes, working personnel and event attendees, University of Portland has cancelled all team activities, including athletic competitions and formal/organized practices, for the remainder of the spring semester. The decision was made in consultation with information provided by local health authorities, the West Coast Conference, and the NCAA in hopes of limiting the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
"This decision is an absolutely necessary one after consultation with local officials as well as the West Coast Conference and the NCAA," Portland Vice President for Athletics Scott Leykam said. "We will be cautious and thoughtful about a return to competition in the future."
Earlier today, the NCAA announced the cancellation of the NCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Championships, as well as all remaining winter and spring championships. The Portland women's basketball team won the 2020 WCC Tournament Championship and was set to participate in March Madness for the first time since 1997.
In addition to women's basketball, the cancellations include the remainder of the baseball, beach volleyball, women's rowing, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's outdoor track and field seasons and men's and women's spring soccer matches.
Fans that purchased tickets for cancelled events will offered credit for future UP athletic events. For more information, contact the Pilot Box Office at 503-943-7525.
