DAVIS, Calif. – The Portland men's tennis team returns to action this weekend to take part in the
Golden State Invitational co-hosted by UC Davis and Sacramento State. The Pilots will open the tournament on Friday morning at 10 a.m. against Nevada (7-6) at the Marya Welch Tennis Center on the UC Davis campus.
Depending on results, the Pilots (4-1) will face either UC Davis or UT Arlington at 2 p.m. on Friday in the second round. The tournament's final matches will be played on Saturday with the third-place and title matches hosted at Sacramento State. Other competing teams include Saint Mary's, New Mexico State and Hawaii. Matches played at UC Davis will have
live scoring.
Portland is coming off of a 7-0 sweep of Southern Utah on Feb. 29. The Pilots also won wins over Portland State, Idaho and UT San Antonio, with the team's lone loss a 4-3 decision at SMU.
"This is a pretty unique tournament and that we play three matches over the course of two days," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "Rarely do you play two quality matches in the same day, but that is what we face this week. A definite test of stamina and health at this point in the season. I feel like we are in pretty good shape at this point. We spent some time this afternoon adjusting to the outdoor conditions again. We have some nice motivation because Nevada beat us up pretty good last year. Win or lose we will continue in this tournament to play good teams at every turn. We know there will be ups and downs from this point forward in the season because everyone we play is going to be pretty good. We're just doing the best we can to take it one match at a time and hope that over the course of the next eight weeks all the work that we have been putting in will show up consistently."
