OMAHA, Neb. --- The Omaha Mavericks held off the Pilots to win game one of a double header 1-0 on Friday afternoon before rallying for a 7-5 victory in the second game at Seymour Smith Park. Hunter Montgomery had three RBI's in game two for the Pilots, and Henry Cheney left the yard with a solo homer.
Â
Portland (11-3) jumped out to an early lead after Jake Holcroft led off with a single in the top of the first. Chad Stevens followed with an RBI double, and just like that the Pilots were on top 1-0.
Â
The lead would grow to 2-0 in the fourth inning when Cheney belted a solo blast over the wall in left field. It's the senior outfielder's second home run of the season. An inning later, the Pilots plated two more to secure a 4-0 edge. Montgomery came through with a two-out, two-run single to center that scored Holcroft and Ty Saunders.
Â
The Mavericks (9-4) did get a run back in the bottom of the fifth, but Portland starter Brett Gillis was otherwise effective. He tossed 5.0 innings in his second career start, and the sophomore right-hander yielded just the one run, which was unearned, on two hits. He struck out five before giving way to the bullpen.
Â
Omaha added another run in the sixth inning on a solo home run before scoring five in the seventh to surge ahead. Garrett Kennedy homered during the frame, and Masen Prososki and Breyden Eckhout added RBI doubles to give the Mavericks a 7-4 lead.
Â
The Pilots did score one in the ninth before bringing the potential go-ahead run to the plate. Again it was Montgomery who provided the RBI, this time with a run-scoring infield single with two outs, but Omaha's Keil Krumwiede was able to record the final out to claim the save.
Â
The loss goes to Portland reliever Connor Knutson (2-1), who was charged with all five runs in the seventh. Omaha's Jacob Alcorn (1-0) gets the win after pitching an inning of relief.
Â
The Mavericks allowed just one hit to win the first game of the double header, and they scored the only run in the bottom of the fourth when Brett Bonar sent an RBI double down the right field line.
Â
Portland starter Christian Peters (3-1) had another solid showing on the mound, tossing 7.2 innings. He scattered six hits and K'd nine. Joey Machado (2-1) takes the win for Omaha, and he struck out six and walked four. He was followed by two relievers, with Jacob Mohler collecting the save.
Â
The Pilots did get a runner on base in the top of the ninth, but were unable to capitalize.
Â
Tomorrow the Pilots play the Creighton Bluejays at TD Ameritrade Park, with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. (Pacific).
