INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – University of Portland men's tennis, beach volleyball, men's track & field and women's soccer each earned
Public Recognition Awards based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate, the NCAA announced on Tuesday. These awards are given each year to teams with APRs in the top 10 percent of their respective sports.
Portland has earned 48 total Public Recognition Awards since the program's inception in 2005, while both men's tennis and beach volleyball were awarded for the third straight season.
Each year, the NCAA honors selected NCAA Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
APR scores for all Division I teams will be released May 19. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years.
Portland has never faced penalties in the 15 years that the APR program has been in play.
