PORTLAND, Ore. --- Brandon Cambridge, a standout for the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Academy, has committed to the University of Portland men's soccer program, announced head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt. From Surrey, British Columbia, Cambridge has been with Vancouver's Academy since 2017.
"We are excited to add Brandon to our soccer family here on The Bluff," Carlin-Voigt said. "We believe he is someone who has the potential to make an immediate impact with his change of pace and ability to create chances for himself and his teammates. Brandon is intrinsically driven to improve and continue to grow as a student-athlete. He follows other recent Portland attacking players who developed in our program. We have high expectations for Brandon to develop into a complete attacking player who is versatile enough to play anywhere along the front line. The best is ahead for Brandon as he comes to us from the highly successful Vancouver Whitecaps Academy and already has extensive experience with their club."
As a 17-year-old with the Vancouver U-23's, Cambridge played against the English Premier League side Brighton Hove Albion, and he once played in a match in front of 20,000 people in South Korea. He regularly trains with the Whitecaps FC first team, and he traveled with the MLS side to their preseason training camp in Hawai'i in 2019. At the U-17 Generation Adidas Cup, Cambridge and the Whitecaps won every game they played, with Cambridge compiling the most assists during the group stage. Cambridge was the team leader in assists for Vancouver's U-17, U-19, and U-23 teams, and he helped the Whitecaps reach the USSDA playoffs in 2018 and 2019.
Cambridge participated at the Canadian national team ID camp 2015, and in 2019 an injury kept him from playing with Team Canada at the U-17 World Cup. He played with the British Columbia Provincial Team from 2014 until 2017.
With his University Hill Secondary School squad, Cambridge reached the Canadian national Championship Finals in 2016 after winning the Provincial Title. They finished second at the Provincial Championships in 2015 and 2017, and Cambridge was the top goal scorer in the BCSPL in 2017.
