STOCKTON, Calif. --- Portland junior guard Haylee Andrews poured in 24 points and scored a clutch bucket late in the game as the Pilots held off the Pacific Tigers to win 65-59 on Saturday afternoon at the Alex G. Spanos Center. Alex Fowler was also solid for the Pilots., collecting 14 points, six rebounds, and six assists.
Â
The win completes the two-game road sweep for the Pilots, who won at Saint Mary's on Thursday. Portland improves to 9-6 overall and to 6-3 in the West Coast Conference.
Â
It was a game of runs as both teams looked to gain an advantage, but it was the Pilots who led for most of the afternoon. With the Pilots ahead by seven to begin the fourth quarter, Andrews buried a three-pointer to extend their lead to 10.
Â
That margin was quickly erased when Pacific scored nine straight points to climb within one. Fowler briefly halted the run with a pair of free throws, but the Tigers soon led for only the second time on the afternoon when a lay-up by Brooklyn McDavid put them on top 53-52.
Â
The Pilots refused to falter, and a lay-in by Liana Kaitu'u gave the lead back to the Pilots. Fowler followed with a bucket down low, and free throws by Andrews made the score 59-53 in Portland's favor with 2:58 remaining.
Â
Kaylin Randhawa then provided Pacific with two points, but with 1:19 showing on the clock Andrews corralled a loose ball and drove baseline for a clutch lay-up. Still trailing in the closing seconds, the Tigers were forced to foul, and the Pilots sealed the win at the free throw line.
Â
Andrews shot 9-for-15 overall, connected on a pair of three-pointers, and scores at least 20 points for the fourth time this season. Fowler records a career-high in assists, and she made six of 10 from the field against the Tigers.
Â
Both Meek and Emme Shearer finished with seven points, and Shearer added four assists.
Â
McDavid scored a team-high 16 points for Pacific, who drop to 5-7 on the year and to 3-6 in the WCC.
Â
The Pilots jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter as Keeley Frawley and Meek both drained three's to help make it a 10-5 game. The Tigers then surged in front with a 7-0 run, but back-to-back baskets down low by Lauren Walker gave Portland a 14-12 edge at the end of the frame.
Â
Andrews caught fire in the second, scoring 10 points in the quarter. Her three-pointer from the right wing handed the Pilots their biggest lead to that point, 22-16, and soon it was a seven-point advantage when she scored with a reverse lay-up on an in-bounds play. Her final field goal of the quarter allowed the Pilots to take a 33-28 lead into halftime.
Â
The lead quickly grew to nine points when Shearer and Fowler both converted from the field to start the second half. Portland was soon up by 11, but a 10-0 Pacific outburst kept the game close. Andrews ended the Pacific run with a lay-up, and Fowler then found Meek with a back-door pass for a lay-in to keep the Pilots in front. Portland ended the period with a 6-0 run that made the score 47-40 going to the fourth.
Â
It's a quick turnaround for the Pilots, who now return home to host San Diego on Monday, with tip-off set for 2 p.m. at the Chiles Center. The game was originally scheduled for Jan. 23 but was postponed.
