PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots scored four goals in the second half to take down the San Diego Toreros 4-1. The win puts the Pilots at 6-7-0 on the year and 2-3-0 in WCC play.
Nedya Sawan scored twice for the Pilots, Taryn Ries scored once and another goal was an own goal in favor of Portland. Sawan's two goals were her eighth and ninth of the season and marked the first multi-goal game of the season for any Pilot. The goal from Ries was her fourth of the season.
It was a fast-paced start to the match, with both teams going on the offensive. Portland had four shots in the first 15 minutes while San Diego had three. Portland was aggressive in attacking their lanes and found plenty of openings to start things off.
Portland found the most success working on the counterattack. They would let San Diego get deep, but then pounce whenever the Toreros tried to shoot. Portland would then work the ball up the wings in hopes of either dribbling into the box or sending a long cross to an onrushing Pilot. The Pilots outshot the Toreros 10-6, but neither team would score in the first 45.
The second half started out similarly to the first. The Pilots looked aggressive yet again, putting pressure on the Toreros on both ends. Portland had no problem handling the Toreros and their attack.
The Pilots were the first ones on the board, starting the scoring in the 59
th minute. Sophia Mattice set up for a corner kick and curled a ball into the box. The ball went into the hands of San Diego goalkeeper Ellyn Casto, but she mishandled the cross and the ball rolled into the back of the net for an own goal. The flub from the Toreros made it 1-0 Portland.
It didn't take long for the Pilots to build on that lead. In the 61
st minute, Elianna Wong slid and played a ball onto Nedya Sawan. The striker took the ball just inside the box, shifted slightly to the right and launched a shot into the top right corner. Casto had no chance to save it, and the Pilots found themselves with a 2-0 lead.
San Diego answered in the 65
th minute. Aryssa Mahrt took control of the ball towards midfield and sprinted towards the goal. She evaded several Pilots, dribbled her way to the top of the box and launched a rocket into the top left corner. The shot was good and the Toreros had cut Portland's lead to one.
It would not stay that way. In the 70
th minute, Taryn Ries took a through ball into the box and was fouled, setting Portland up for the penalty kick. Ries would take the shot herself, stepping up to the ball and sending it right by Casto to make it 3-1 Portland.
The Pilots would score one more goal in the 87
th to secure the win. Selma Licina took possession of a loose ball just outside the box and dribbled it towards the goal. She played a soft pass to Sawan, who took one quick dribble and shot it right by Casto to make it a season-high four goals for Portland. That 4-1 scoreline would prove to be the final.
Next up, the Pilots will host the defending national champions – the Santa Clara Broncos – on Saturday, Oct. 23. The match will be televised on local CBS affiliate KOIN-TV, with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats, video and ticket options.
