PORTLAND, ORE. – Portland Pilot men's soccer has brought in the eighth-best recruiting class in the nation for the Class of 2022 with the signing of three players – Chris Jaime, Joaquin Eisenburg and Tommy Musto – during the early signing period. It is the sixth-straight year the Pilots have had a top 20 recruiting class and the third year the Pilots have put together a top 10 class during the Nick Carlin-Voigt era.
"We are excited to announce the signing of three additional Pilots who are very excited about joining our family and soccer culture," head coach Carlin-Voigt said. "All three bring a competitive grit, calmness on the ball and burning desire to become the best versions of themselves. We will be announcing future members of this class in the weeks and months ahead to round out the class. We also will be getting a lift with some newcomers who have redshirted this year in Nick Fernandez, Sebastian Hernandez and Nick Denley, who are now back in training, looking sharp and ready to help the Portland Pilots in the years ahead."
Take a look at the three signees from the early signing period.
Chris Jaime – MF/F – San Diego, Calif.
A Southern California native, Jaime is the 37
th ranked recruit in the nation according to TopDrawerSoccer.com. He was a part of the LAFC Academy system, training regularly with LAFC's first team. He signed an amateur contract with the Las Vegas Lights in the USL Championship League and has played 16 games with the team, which is coached by former Portland Pilot legend Steve Cherundolo. He's scored one goal with the Lights.
"Chris is a fantastic student and humble competitor who has really thrived in the LAFC youth system since moving up to LA from the famous Nomads Academy," Carlin-Voigt said. "He is one of the best pure soccer players in all of Southern California. He fits perfectly into how we aim to play as he is a very technical, cerebral player who plays between lines and has the ability to beat you off the dribble or through combination play. We can't wait to get Chris on campus and help him transition to the physical demands of college soccer. I know our fans will appreciate his soccer IQ, soft feet and ability to make plays for our team."
Jaime also has experience playing with Nomads SC, a club that's a part of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. He was a standout in the U.S. Youth National Team regional ID Series back in 2020 as well.
"I felt Portland was the best place not only for myself, but for my family for a number of reasons," Jaime said. "The staff always checked up on me and my family and showed immense interest. They feel like true family. The location and weather of Portland, in my opinion, is great soccer weather and I would definitely enjoy staying there. Their style of play and soccer program was a huge factor in my decision, and I feel like I can succeed under the team and great coaching staff."
Joaquin Eisenburg – MF – Half Moon Bay, Calif.
Eisenburg is ranked the 48
th on TopDrawerSoccer.com and is the No. 4 recruit coming out of Northern California. The midfielder from Half Moon Bay plays currently for MLS's San Jose Earthquakes U-23 team and was invited to the U.S. Youth National Team Regional ID Center. He also has preseason experience with the Earthquakes' first team as well.
"[Head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt] wants the best for me and wants me to reach my full potential, which was my most important thing in choosing a school," Eisenburg said. "I think that Portland is the best place for me to develop into a top player and while I'm here I think that we can challenge for some titles."
Tommy Musto – MF – Maui, Hawaii
Tommy Musto joins the Pilots all the way from Maui, Hawaii. He was the top-ranked recruit in the state and the 112
th best recruit in the nation according to TopDrawerSoccer. He also has experience with the ODP Regional Team and is a member of the US Club Soccer ID2 Program.
"I've known Tommy for many years as he started coming to our ID camps at 13 years old," Carlin-Voigt said. "Tommy is a pure soccer player who loves the game and loves being on the ball and connecting passes. He has good vision for a youth player. He's grown recently and as his physical ability and range continue to improve we think he's going to be a very steady MF in our program who can play any of the three central roles in a 4-3-3. Tommy comes from a great family who value education and he has a solid foundation as person that will serve him well during his formative years. Tommy is excited to be a Pilot and we are excited he signed with Portland."
"I chose Portland because of the special soccer environment and the ability to prove myself at one of the top programs in the country," Musto said.
Several Pilots have gone on to find success professionally. Three players – Benji Michel, Paul Christensen and Kris Reaves – have signed first-team contracts with MLS teams while one player – Jacobo Reyes – is playing currently with Liga MX powerhouse Monterrey.
The Pilots will play their final match of the regular season this Saturday against the San Francisco Dons. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., with the match being broadcast on Portland's CW (KRCW-TV).
