PORTLAND, Ore. – Moses Wood led five Pilots in double figures with 21 points to guide Portland past Arkansas-Pine Bluff 86-74 Thursday night at the Chiles Center. The Pilots won their third straight to improve to 3-1 on the season, while the Golden Lions drop to 0-4.
Portland shot 56 percent from the floor overall, dished out a season-high 19 assists, outrebounded UAPB by a 37-29 margin and racked up a 42-18 edge in points in the paint.
Wood was an efficient 6-for-8 from the field and 7-of-8 at the foul line. He also grabbed eight rebounds in 32 minutes of action for the Pilots. Freshman Chika Nduka added 15 points and six rebounds off the bench, going 6-for-7 from the field.
Tyler Robertson, Vasilije Vucinic and Mike Meadows each scored 10 points. Robertson grabbed nine rebounds and dished out a team-best six assists as well.
Portland raced to a 13-point lead late in the first half after a pair of Vucinic free throws. The Golden Lions scored the next five points before Vucinic converted a tip-in before the buzzer to make it 45-35 at the break.
UAPB went on a 7-0 run early in the second half to cut the margin to five points. Robertson answered with a three-pointer and the Pilots slowly extended the lead to as much as 17 points with 4:15 remaining.
Shawn Williams gave UAPB one last burst by knocking down a series of tough shots included 11 straight points to make it 80-72 with 1:30 left, but the Pilots got a defensive stop and converted free throws in the final minute to secure the win.
Williams was exceptional and finished with a game and career-high 31 points for the Golden Lions. Brandon Brown added a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
