HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Portland Pilots defeated Prairie View A&M 80-54 on Sunday to finish 2-0 at the Bank of Hawaii Classic hosted at the Stan Sheriff Center. Portland held the Panthers (1-4) to 32 percent shooting for the game and forced 27 turnovers in the lopsided victory.
Alex Fowler led four Pilots (4-1) in double figures with 14 points and nine rebounds. Haylee Andrews stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, six rebounds and six assists, while Emme Shearer and Liana Kaitu'u added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Fowler and Andrews got the Pilots going early as the team would lead start-to-finish. Fowler scored 10 points in the opening period and Andrews dished out four assists as Portland raced to an early 12-point lead and carried a 21-11 edge into the first break.
Portland held PVAM to just 8-for-30 shooting in the opening half and carried a 33-22 lead into halftime.
The Pilots opened the game up with a huge third quarter, outscoring the Panthers by a 29-12 margin. Rose Pflug scored seven points in the perid, while Shearer and Andrews added six apiece. Portland was able to rest starters late and get extended minutes for some young reserves.
The game marked the first appearances of the season for McKelle Meek and MJ Bruno off the bench for the Pilots. Meek buried a fourth quarter three-pointer, while Bruno grabbed three rebounds and scored her first collegiate point with a pair of free throw late in regulation. Freshman Emily Sewell added four points and a pair of rebounds.
The Pilots shot 43 percent overall and made 15-of-19 free throws. Portland gained a 50-20 margin in points in the paint and 31-15 edge in points off of turnovers.
