PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots (5-1, 0-0 WCC) earned their third win in a row 97-49 over the Evergreen State Geoducks (1-4, 0-0 CCL). Alex Fowler was the leading scorer for the Pilots with 14 points as well as six rebounds.
Five Pilots scored in double digits including Fowler in this one. Rose Pflug put up a season-high 12 points with two makes from three, Maddie Muhlheim had 11 points while Liana Kaitu'u and Maisie Burnham each added 10. Emme Shearer and Haylee Andrews had nine points each, with Shearer matching her career high in steals with five. 11 Pilots scored in the game.
Jalyn Sackrider and Trinity Betoney were the leading scorers for the Geoducks, scoring 12 points each. The Pilots held the Geoducks to under 40% shooting at 36.8%. This marks the fourth time this season the Pilots have held and opponent to under 40% from the field.
The Pilots led for almost the full 40 minutes, scoring within the first 15 seconds and never looking back. They outscored Evergreen State by at least 11 points in ever quarter, creating the most separation by outscoring the Geoducks 28-13 in the second quarter. After that, the Pilots were able to cruise to victory.
Portland has scored at least 90 points in three of their first six games this year. This is the first time since 1983 that the Pilots have been able to eclipse 90 points three times within the first six games.
Part of the reason for Portland's success offensively was the stellar passing. The Pilots had 25 assists on the night, just two shy of their season high. McKelle Meek led all passers with eight assists in just 19 minutes of play.
This was the best outside shooting game for the Pilots so far this season. They hit 10 shots from beyond the arc, with six different Pilots making a three. Muhlheim's three makes from outside were the most of any Pilot.
Portland's prominence in the paint as well as the contribution from the bench also helped them earn the victory. Portland had 44 points in the paint and had 54 of their 97 points come from bench players. Three players -- Pflug, Kaitu'u and Burnham -- broke double digits off the bench.
Portland's work on the glass was crucial to their victory. They nabbed a season-high 58 rebounds, including 25 offensive boards. The Pilots capitalized whenever they got a rebound, with 23 second chance points. Keeley Frawley led the Pilots in that category with 10. Six different Pilots collected at least five rebounds on the night.
The Pilots' press once again caused problems for their opponent. The Geoducks had 25 turnovers on the night, with the Pilots having 18 steals. Portland scored 24 points off those turnovers, with 20 fastbreak points as well.
Next up, the Pilots will host the Warner Pacific Knights at the Chiles Center on Tuesday, Nov. 30. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. Links to live stats and video will be available at PortladPilots.com.
