PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots (8-2, 0-0 WCC) prevailed 71-54 in their Rose City showdown against the Portland State Vikings (4-5, 0-2 Big Sky). Dominant post play propelled the Pilots to victory, with Alex Fowler putting up 26 points and 12 rebounds and Lucy Cochrane adding 14 points, six boards and nine blocks.
Maisie Burnham was the only other Pilot to eclipse double digits on the day, scoring 10 points, all of those coming in the second quarter during a critical Pilot run. Haylee Andrews added eight points along with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Fowler's double-double is her second just this week and the third for the Pilots this year. She now has 16 career double-doubles. Her 26 points are the most by a Pilot this season and are the second most she's ever posted while also recording a double-double.
Cochrane once again dominated defensively for the Pilots, swatting away nine shots this afternoon. This is the third game in a row that Cochrane has posted at least five blocks. Her nine blocks were just one shy of tying the single-game record set by Rosemary Adams in 1992. No Pilot in the 2000s has ever posted more than seven blocks in a game. She is also the first Pilot with three games of five blocks or more in the same year since Rachel Warren in 2006. For reference, the last time the Pilots as a team had at least nine blocks was 2015.
Savannah Dhaliwal was the leading scorer for the Vikings with 13. The Pilots, however, stymied Portland State's offense for most of the game, holding them to just 30.8% shooting from the field.
The first half played out similarly to the Pilots' previous bout against the CSUN Matadors. The first quarter was a tight battle, but Portland took control in the second quarter. They put the pressure on the Vikings inside, either scoring in the paint or making their way to the free throw line. They made eight free throws in the quarter and had 10 points off the bench from Maisie Burnham that pushed them to a 35-23 lead.
The third quarter gave Portland a chance to solidify their lead, and solidify they did. They held the Vikings to just nine points in the quarter while scoring 19 of their own. Portland State put together a valiant effort in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Pilots 22-17, but it was too little too late as Portland cruised to a victory.
Once again, Portland's work inside proved to be a difference maker. They outscored the Vikings 40-24 in the paint, outrebounded them 48-40 and had 12 blocks on the day. The 12 blocks ties the team record for most in a game since joining NCAA Division I, which was set back in 2006. Portland also forced 21 turnovers and had 14 steals.
The Pilots once again had 20 assists on the night, which marks the seventh time this year they've had at least 20 assists in a game. The only are of struggle was the three-point shooting, where they went 0-for-17. It's the first time the Pilots haven't made a three in a game since 2014.
Next up, the Pilots will be back at the Chiles Center when they welcome the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks to Portland on Tuesday, Dec. 14. Tipoff for the game is set for 7 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats, video and ticket options.
