PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland's dynamic duo of Alex Fowler and Haylee Andrews shined as the Portland Pilots (9-2, 0-0 WCC) defeated the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks (8-3, 0-0 WAC) 70-59 at the Chiles Center. Their 9-2 start is Portland's best since the 1997-98 season.
Fowler and Andrews both broke the 20-point mark for the Pilots, with Fowler posting a game-high 22 and Andrews scoring an even 20. Fowler added nine rebounds, two blocks and two assists while Andrews nearly had a triple-double by adding 11 rebounds and eight assists.
Stephanie Visscher and Aiyana Johnson were the leading scorers for the Ladyjacks with 14 each. They also added 10 and nine rebounds respectively. Stephen F. Austin shot under 40% for this one, marking the seventh time Portland has held a team under that mark this year.
The first quarter was a grind for both sides, with both teams shooting under 40% from the field. But the second quarter was a fruitful one for the Pilots, as they got to line to make eight free throws and shot just under 54% from the field to take a 37-32 lead into the half.
The Pilots held the Ladyjacks to just nine points in the third quarter thanks to a menacing press that forced turnovers that translated to easy shots. The Pilots led by double digits in the early minutes of the quarter, but the Ladyjacks started forcing turnovers of their own and brought it within five. But the Pilots stayed poised, with Andrews in particular stepping up with key buckets late in the fourth. The Pilots fended off the Ladyjacks for a 70-59 win.
Portland once again won the major battles inside. They outscored the Ladyjacks in the paint 48-36 and outrebounded them 46-39. The Pilots' 20 offensive rebounds helped keep several possessions alive. Lucy Cochrane was also a force inside defensively, posting four blocks. This is the fourth game in a row where she's had at least four blocks in a game.
The Pilots had 21 assists in this one, making this the eighth game this year where they've tallied 20 assists or more. That quick passing proved especially useful on Fastbreak opportunities, with Portland totaling 20 fastbreak points on the night.
Next up, the Pilots will travel to California for a matchup against the Fresno State Bulldogs on Monday, Dec. 20. Tipoff is set for noon. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video options.
