PORTLAND, Ore. – Trey Smith hit eight of San Jose State's 17 three-pointers for a career-high 24 points in leading the Spartans to a 90-78 victory over Portland Friday night in a non-conference men's basketball game at the Chiles Center.
The Spartans (6-4) have now won five of their last six games, while the Pilots (8-5) dropped their second straight.
Mike Meadows scored a team-high 16 points for Portland, while Moses Wood, Tyler Robertson and Chris Austin added 14 apiece.
Portland shot 48 percent from the field for the game and gained a 44-26 edge in paint scoring, but San Jose State led nearly start to finish as the team knocked down shot after shot from the perimeter throughout regulation.
SJSU shot an opponent season high of 57 percent overall and knocked down 17-of-33 three-pointers overall. The Spartans drilled 10-of-17 first half triples and got a putback basket just before the halftime buzzer from Trey Anderson to take a 42-35 halftime lead.
Portland got defensive stops on the first four possessions of the second period around a Meadows three and Wood layup to cut the deficit to 42-40, but the Pilots came up empty on four straight trips as SJSU answered with consecutive threes to push the margin back up to eight.
A Wood triple made it 59-53, but that would be as close as the Pilots would get as the Spartans rattled off a 15-3 run and led by double-digits for most of the remainder of regulation.
Portland got a late spark from freshman guard Yaru Harvey who made his only field goal attempt, collected a pair of steals and four assists in 10 minutes off the bench.
Besides Smith, five other Spartans finished in double figures with Omari Moore tallying 13 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists and Anderson added a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds.
The Pilots will look to rebound with a two-game road trip to conclude non-conference play beginning on Sunday at Montana State with a 1 p.m. (PT) tip-off. The trip concludes with a Wednesday, Dec. 22 game at UC Davis at 2 p.m. Both games will have live radio coverage on 910 ESPN Portland (KMTT).
