BOZEMAN, Mont. – Amin Adamu hit a turnaround jumper with 0.8 seconds left as Montana State pulled off a come-from-behind 61-59 win over Portland Sunday afternoon at Worthington Arena. The Bobcats (8-4) led for just 10 seconds in the game as the Pilot defense was stifling for most of the afternoon.
Portland guard Chris Austin finished with his first career double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds, including numerous big shots down the stretch. Tyler Robertson added 16 points for the Pilots (8-6).
Adamu was one of four Bobcats in double figures. Tyler Patterson added 14 points off the bench, including a clutch late three to give Montana State its first lead.
Portland held the Bobcats to 28 percent shooting overall and just 16 first half points, which matched the lowest points allowed in a half to a Division I opponent in program history.
The Bobcats countered by converting 24-of-31 free throws and forcing 14 Pilot turnovers that led to a 17-2 margin in points off of turnovers.
Portland led nearly start-to-finish until Patterson hit a three out of timeout for a 59-57 MSU lead with 23 seconds left. Patterson then fouled Moses Wood who knocked down both free throws to tie the game. The Bobcats went to Adamu on the left block and he turned to the baseline and swished a 12-foot jumper with 0.8 seconds left. Portland had a 40-footer at the buzzer by Kristian Sjolund miss and Montana State escaped with the win.
Portland's focus on the defensive end paid off as the Bobcats were unable to get into any rhythm offensively. Montana State started just 3-for-30 from the field as the Pilots raced out to an 18-7 lead. Portland took a 26-16 lead into the half as the Bobcats were just 5-of-34 from the field. The Pilots shot 31 percent in the half, but eight different players scored in the period.
Back-to-back three-pointers from Patterson early in the second half erased a ten-point Pilot halftime lead. Austin responded for Portland with four consecutive buckets to go ahead 40-35.
Four free throws from the Bobcats made it one-point game, but Chika Nduka got a big putback followed by a Robertson jumper and Mike Meadows three-pointer to go back up eight. The Pilots maintained a slim lead over the next few minutes. Austin buried a clutch, shot clock-beating three-pointer for a 56-51 lead with 3:19 left.
Steal and layup from Bishop tied the game at 56 with 1:09 remaining. The Pilots then got an offensive rebound by Moses Wood who was fouled and made 1-of-2 with 37 seconds to go for a 57-56 lead setting up the final sequence.
This was the second meeting between the two programs this season after Montana State took a 69-66 decision at the Incarnate Word Tournament on Nov. 26.
Portland will remain on the road and conclude the non-conference schedule with a game at UC Davis on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The Pilots open West Coast Conference play by hosting BYU on Jan. 1 at 7 p.m.
