PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots men's soccer team had three players make the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I West Region Third Team for their performance this past year: goalkeeper George Tasouris, defender Kevin Bonilla and midfielder Jake Arteaga. It is the first time that three Pilots have all earned recognition since Rey Ortiz, Luke Hendel and Fracesco Tiozzo all earned honors.
Tasouris was one of the top goalkeepers in the WCC this past season. He finished the regular season second in the conference in shutouts (six), total saves (58) and save percentage (.797) and fourth in goals-against average. He was the first Pilot to earn WCC Player of the Week honors since 2017, when Benji Michel did so. He earned All-WCC Second Team recognition last month.
Bonilla was a force on both ends along the back line for the Pilots. As a right back, the Dallas native finished the regular season with one goal and three assists and added two more assists in Portland's 3-2 victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against the Seattle U Redhawks. Bonilla also earned WCC Player of the Week honors back on Oct. 11 and was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week back on Sept. 13.
Arteaga was the only Pilot to make the All-WCC First Team last month, becoming the first to do so since Rey Ortiz in 2019. He started in all 17 games he played for the Pilots and was a steady presence in the midfield. He earned one assist on the year in Portland's 4-0 drubbing of the then-No. 15 Northern Illinois Huskies.
The Pilots put together an impressive 2021 campaign, finishing 11-7-1 and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. They finished the year tied for third in the WCC and beat four teams throughout the year that finished in the top 40 in RPI. They hosted their third playoff match since 2002, beating Seattle U 3-2.
