PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots (7-2, 0-0 WCC) finished their four-game homestand strong against the CSUN Matadors (3-5, 0-0 Big West) with a 80-62 win at the Chiles Center. The win snapped a four-game losing streak to the Matadors.
Several Pilots stuffed the stat sheet against the Matadors. Four Pilots scored in double figures, with Haylee Andrews, Rose Pflug, Alex Fowler and Lucy Cochrane leading the way for Portland. Andrews had the most points by a Pilot this year with 22, Pflug and Fowler each had 16 while Cochrane had 10. Pflug's 16 matches her career-high as a Pilot.
Fowler earned the 15
th double-double of her career by adding 13 boards in this one. It is the third double-double from a Pilot this season, with Andrews and Cochrane nabbing the other two. Andrews also added six assists and four rebounds.
Cochrane once again had a dominant game on the defensive end. She had six blocks on the night, marking the third time this year she has posted at least four blocks in a game. Cochrane headed into the game as the top shot-blocker in the WCC. She is the first Pilot since Sara Zaragoza in 2014 to post at least five blocks twice in the same year and the first to put up at least five in back-to-back games.
Tess Amundsen was the leading scorer for the Matadors with 15. The Pilots held CSUN to around 35% from the floor, which makes this the fifth game they've held an opponent under 40% shooting this year.
The first quarter was close as both teams were gridlocked in a defensive battle. The Pilots led by only two after the first, but exploded in the second half to create some separation. They hit five threes in the quarter and shot 53% from the field to take a 39-23 heading into halftime.
The third quarter was a more back-and-forth affair, with the Pilots and Matadors trading baskets the whole 10 minutes. That served the Pilots well thanks to their big lead they'd already made for themselves. They kept the Matadors in check for the final quarter and took this one 80-62.
Portland's work inside proved crucial to their success. They outrebounded the Matadors 48-37, outscored them 50-38 in the paint and accumulated seven blocks on the night.
The Pilots once again did well to share the rock, racking up 22 assists. It is the sixth time this year that Portland has put up at least 20 assists in a game this year.
Next up, the Pilots will head across town for a matchup with the Portland State Vikings. The two teams will face off on Sunday, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m., with the game set for a 2 p.m. tipoff. The game will be broadcasted on Portland's CW with a live stream and live stats available at PortlandPilots.com.
