SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Alex Fowler recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds and the West Coast Conference game between Portland and San Diego was closely contested from the opening whistle, but the Toreros held off the Pilots in the fourth quarter to win 66-59 on Thursday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Haylee Andrews also had a solid game for the Pilots, finishing with 17 points, six rebounds, and six assists.
Â
San Diego (12-5, 9-3 WCC) took an early lead in the first quarter and were soon ahead by nine. The Pilots (10-10, 7-7 WCC) responded, and a quick 7-0 run brought them within two. Both Fowler and Andrews contributed to the run, and Jayce Gorzeman buried a three-pointer in her first game back from injury.
Â
The Toreros tried to pull away in the second period and led 35-26 at the half, but the Pilots cut into the deficit in the third quarter. Fowler hit a big bucket while getting fouled during the third, and Gorzeman connected again from the field. Portland was then within four points by the end of the period after Keeley Frawley knocked down a jumper.
Â
San Diego did create some separation in the final frame, but the Pilots refused to go away. Andrews hit back-to-back three's to pull the Pilots within four, and it was still only a six-point game moments later when Andrews drained another jumper to make it a 60-54 game with about two minutes left. But the Toreros would hold on from there to claim the home win.
Â
Gorzeman, who missed the past few weeks, finished with eight points on the night, and Fowler also handed out six assists to match her career high.
Â
Steph Gorman scored a game-high 19 points for San Diego, and Sydney Hunter collected a double-double with 15 points and 11 boards.
Â
The Pilots next travel to Provo, Utah, to play the BYU Cougars on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
