PROVO, Utah --- Portland junior guard Haylee Andrews exploded in the fourth quarter to finish with 16 points and she added 12 assists for a double-double, but the Brigham Young Cougars held off the Pilots to win 75-68 on Saturday afternoon at the Marriott Center. It's the second double-double this season for Andrews, who missed matching a program record of assists in a game by one.
Â
Sophomore Alex Fowler was also solid for Portland (10-11, 7-8 WCC), scoring 21 points, and Emme Shearer continued her stellar freshman campaign with 11 points.
Â
Fowler knocked down a pair of three-pointers to open the game, and Keeley Frawley followed with a three to help the Pilots jump ahead 9-3. The Cougars recovered and led by six points going to the second quarter. Fowler resumed her torrid shooting in the second as she helped Portland climb within one. Liana Kaitu'u, a Utah native, then buried a three-pointer, and the Pilots were back on top 26-24 with 4:54 remaining in the half.
Â
The Pilots continued their second-quarter surge when a traditional three-point play by Shearer gave the visitors a five-point lead. BYU then responded with a quick run, and they took a slight 33-31 edge at the break.
Â
The Cougars tried to pull away in the third, but Shearer provided an answer by drilling a three-ball. Fowler followed with a lay-up that helped keep the deficit at five points, but by the end of the period BYU was ahead 57-47.
Â
After going scoreless the first three quarters, the shots started falling for Andrews in the fourth. She scored six straight to begin the frame, and she found Shearer for another three that kept the Pilots within reach. Andrews also came through with a clutch and-one, and she'd soon feed a pass to Fowler for a fast-break lay-up that made the score 68-63 in BYU's favor with 1:45 left.
Â
Shaylee Gonzalez then scored consecutive buckets for the Cougars, but Andrews refused to be denied and buried a three to cut the margin to six points with 30 seconds showing on the clock. From there the Cougars made just enough shots, free throws, and defensive stops to secure the win.
Â
BYU (16-3, 12-2 WCC), who upended No. 16 Gonzaga on Thursday, was led by Gonzales' 26 points. Lauren Gustin also registered a double-double with 17 points and 16 boards.
Â
Andrews matches her career-high of 12 assists for the third time in her career, and it's her seventh double-double. Kathy Adelman holds Portland's single-game record of 13 dimes, which she did in 1990.
Â
It's the sixth time this season to score at least 20 points for Fowler, and it's also the sixth time for Shearer to reach double digits in points.
Â
The Pilots next return to The Bluff for their final two regular season games. First on Thursday, the Loyola Marymount Lions visit the Chiles Center for a 5 p.m. WCC contest. The Pepperdine Waves then come to Portland on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
