PORTLAND, Ore. – Haylee Andrews and Alex Fowler both had double-doubles to help the Portland Pilots defeat the Loyola Marymount Lions 73-63, snapping a three-game losing streak. Andrews tallied 21 points and 10 assists while Fowler nabbed 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Portland won thanks to a second-half surge. The Pilots outscored the Lions 45-25 in the second half thanks to the relentless pressure they put on LMU. Portland forced 18 turnovers and scored 28 points off those opportunities.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair. The Pilots got down 6-0 early but scrounged together a 10-0 run thanks to Alex Fowler's dominance in the paint. Portland tried to apply pressure early and often to fluster the Lions, though LMU did well to break the press. At the end of the quarter, Fowler launched a late shot that was short, but freshman Emme Shearer got the rebound and put it back at the buzzer and give Portland a 17-16 lead at the end of the first.
Portland maintained that energy going into the second period, but the Lions once again found ways past the Pilots' press. LMU found the gaps in Portland's zone defense and worked it inside to Khari Clark, who had 10 points at the half. Portland only made 27% of their shots in quarter and fell behind 38-28 at the half.
The Pilots came out of the half energized, utilizing their full-court press to force nine turnovers in the quarter. The Pilots were able to turn those turnovers into points, starting the third on a 15-0 run to take back the lead. Portland won the quarter 25-4 to take a 53-42 lead going into the final quarter.
Fourth quarter scoring was slow to start, with neither finding the bottom of the net for the first two minutes. But the Pilots never let up the pressure and maintained their lead for the rest of the half. Andrews came up with eight fourth-quarter points and led Portland to a 73-63 win.
The Pilots will play their home and regular season finale against the Pepperdine Waves at the Chiles Center on Saturday. The game will be televised on NBC Sports Northwest and will tip-off at 2 p.m. Prior to tip-off, Portland will honor its four seniors – Jayce Gorzeman, Maddie Mulheim, Lauren Walker and Kristina Woolridge – as part of Senior Day.
