PORTLAND, Ore. – Haylee Andrews and Alex Fowler combined for 60 points as the Portland Pilots mounted a furious fourth quarter rally to force overtime and beat the Pepperdine Waves 101-94 Saturday afternoon at the Chiles Center. Andrews had a career-high 31 points along with nine assists and seven rebounds while Alex Fowler scored 29, including 23 in the second half.
The emotional game began with the program honoring its four seniors – Maddie Muhlheim, Lauren Walker, Jayce Gorzeman and Kristina Wooldridge – as part of Senior Day. All four seniors also started their final regular season game.
The Waves (5-17, 2-16 WCC) were up to the task and outscored the Pilots (12-11, 9-8) in each of the first three quarters. Pepperdine pushed to its largest lead of the game early in the fourth quarter with back-to-back layups for a 76-61 lead.
But the Pilots never let up, coming at the Waves with relentless pressure. The full-court press finally started to pay dividends. Portland forced numerous backcourt violations and flustered Pepperdine's backcourt. Fowler made consecutive layups and Kelsey Lenzie buried a deep three to bring the deficit to singles digits.
Portland then held the Waves scoreless for nearly five minutes as Fowler dominated inside while Andrews sliced through the lane for shots at the rim. The duo combined for an 11-0 run to give the Pilots an 81-79 lead with less than three minutes remaining.
The teams traded free throws and then Andrews' layup tied the game again at 86. A tough foul call on the Pilots put Pepperdine's Malia Bambrick at the line. She made the first and missed the second, but Monique Andriulo followed the shot and put it back to give Pepperdine an 89-86 lead.
After both teams exchanged free throws, Portland ran one more play to try and find an open three. Lenzie drew the foul on the three-point attempt with 5.6 seconds left. She knocked down all three free throws – the first attempts of the season for the sophomore – and the Pilots got a stop on defense to force overtime.
The overtime period followed the same script as the second half. The Pilots ramped up the pressure defensively while Fowler and Andrews took charge on offense. Portland forced four turnovers in the period and hit some clutch free throws at the end to make it 101-94 victory for the Pilots.
The game was high-scoring affair from the jump, with both teams putting up big numbers in the first half. The Pilots struggled to slow down Pepperdine's offensive attack. The Waves found the most success inside the arc. They scored 46 points and shot a blistering 68 percent from the field in the first half, with only four of those field goals coming from three.
The Pilots shot well from the field in the first half as well at 54 percent. Mulheim hit four of nine threes and had a team-leading 14 first-half points. Her four threes helped push her into second all-time in career three-pointers made at Portland. Pepperdine's hot start gave the Waves a 46-38 halftime lead.
Portland came out in the third quarter with their trademark energy, pressing the Waves up and down the court. The Pilots were able to push the Waves, with Fowler and Liana Kaitu'u scoring eight and seven points respectively in the quarter. But Pepperdine kept up their hot shooting, finding the gaps in Portland's zone defense and shooting 64 percent from the field in the period to take a 72-61 lead into the fourth.
Andrews' 31 points bested her previous high of 28 against Weber State on Nov. 9, 2019. Fowler finished 12-of-16 from the field and matched a career-high with six assists.
Next up, the Pilots will travel to Las Vegas for the WCC Tournament at the Orleans Arena, March 4-9. Seedings for the tournament will be announced on Sunday, while schedules, stats, and coverage can be found at the
