PORTLAND, Ore. – The eighth-ranked Portland men's cross country team and No. 25 women's cross country team are gearing up for the 2020 West Coast Conference Championships taking place on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at Craig Ranch Regional Park in North Las Vegas, Nev. The women's 6K race will begin at 10 a.m. PT, followed by the men's 8K race at 11 a.m.
This year's meet will not have live video, but live results links for the races will be available on
PortlandPilots.com.
Both Pilot programs were projected to finish in second-place in the 2020-21 WCC Preseason Coaches Poll. Women's runners Stella Gillman and Anna Pataki were selected to the All-WCC preseason team, and representing the men on the all-conference preseason team were Reuben Kiprono, Riley Osen, and Evert Silva.
Portland's men's and women's squads both finished in second place at last year's WCC Championships. WCC favorite BYU enters the meet ranked
No. 1 nationally on the men's side and No. 2 in the
women's rankings, as both look to defend their 2019 WCC titles. San Francisco's women's team heads into the WCC Championships as the only other conference opponent with a national ranking (No. 30).
Kiprono collected All-WCC honors with a sixth-place finish at the 2019 championship race, and Pataki just missed the top-10 in 2019 with her 11th-place finish.
"We are so excited for this meet," said women's head coach Ian Solof. "The team has been training well and everyone is ready to compete. It should be an exciting battle."
Both programs are coming off recent team wins at the Oregon Invitational earlier this month. The Pilot women posted a team score of 32 while defeating four other programs, including two nationally-ranked programs and another receiving votes in that week's USTFCCCA Coaches' Poll. The Pilot men finished with a team score of 20 to cruise past No. 10 Oregon (45) and unranked San Francisco (71) in the three-team men's race.
Heading into the 2020 WCC Championships, Portland's men are currently ranked second in the West Regional Poll, only behind Stanford. The Pilot women hold the fourth-place position in the poll and are the highest ranked WCC school in the West Region.
With the annual NCAA West Regional Meet cancelled this year, both programs are seeking bids to the NCAA Championships, set for Monday, Mar. 15 in Stillwater, Okla.
