PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots scored five goals in the first half and never looked back en route to a 9-0 win over the George Fox Bruins in the men's soccer season opener played on Wednesday night at Merlo Field. Both senior Luke Hendel and freshman Brandon Cambridge recorded two goals and an assist on the night.
Â
Hendel's first goal came in the third minute as the Pilots (1-0) took control early. Jake Arteaga helped set up the goal when he sent a nice ball into the right side of the 18-yard box. Hendel gained possession, cut across the area, and hit a low strike into the right side of the net.
Â
Moments later Hendel tallied one of the assists as Miles Robinson, a graduate transfer from Santa Clara, made it 2-0 Pilots. Hendel found Miguel Yuste at the top of the box, and Yuste connected with an unmarked Robinson, who slotted it in from the top of the six for his first career goal at Portland. Hendel then stretched the lead to 3-0 with his second goal during the first 20 minutes, and Cambridge took care of the next two.
Â
On his first goal, he controlled a deflected clearance before turning and planting a shot into the back of the net. His next goal came just before the end of the half when Buba Fofanah, another freshman, sent a perfectly struck ball through the area. Cambridge took a touch and hit one inside the far side of the net, giving the Pilots a 5-0 advantage at the half.
Â
Yusuf Cueceoglu scored the Pilots' first two goals after the break, with Cambridge, Michael Hamilton, and Robinson collecting assists.
Â
Fofanah claimed his first career goal in the 73rd minute after he controlled a ball from freshman Nick Fernandez with a brilliant first touch near the penalty spot. Fernandez capped the scoring for the Pilots with a goal of his own, which happed in the 84th minute.
Â
Portland dominated possession all night long as they combined for 23 shots, while not allowing an attempt by George Fox. The nine goals are the most scored by the Pilots since 2001 when they also netted nine during a win over Air Force.
