The Portland Pilots women's soccer team is on the road for a West Coast Conference matchup this Saturday, Mar. 27, against the San Diego Toreros. The match is set for 12 p.m. with live video and stats available at PortlandPilots.com.
Portland is 2-2-2 on the season after being picked to finish fifth in the WCC preseason poll. They had one player named to the All-WCC preseason team in forward Taryn Ries. Ries – who was a first team All-WCC selection in 2019 – is currently tied for fourth in the WCC in goals scored with five. In Portland's most recent match, they played the No. 24 Pepperdine Waves to a 0-0 draw.
Senior goalkeeper Madison Zamora has thrived since being inserted as a starter. Zamora and the Pilots have recorded three consecutive shutouts against Pacific (2-0), San Francisco (0-0) and Pepperdine. Portland has not had four consecutive shutouts since 2010, when the Pilots were ranked No. 2 nationally at the time.
The Pilots have featured a young roster as seven true freshmen have started at least one match this spring, including Sophia Mattice and Camille Ashe starting all six matches.
The Toreros are 1-5 this season after being picked to finish seventh in the conference. They are 1-3 in conference play with losses to the Gonzaga Bulldogs, Saint Mary's Gaels and BYU Cougars, their lone win coming against the Loyola Marymount Lions on Feb. 27. Their most recent match was their loss to No. 16 BYU on Mar. 24, which they lost 6-0.
The all-time series between these two is tied 6-6, with San Diego most recently coming out on top. They beat Portland at Merlo Field on Nov. 9, 2019. The Toreros have won five of the last six matchups between them and the Pilots.
After this, the Pilots will travel to Spokane, Wash. to take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs. The two teams will play on Saturday, Apr. 3 with the time to be announced at a later date. You can find live stats and video on PortlandPilots.com.
