PORTLAND, Ore. – Senior striker Taryn Ries scored twice and the Portland defense shut out the Pacific Tigers for a 2-0 win Saturday afternoon in the team's West Coast Conference home-opener at Merlo Field at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex.
Ries scored her fourth and fifth goals of the season to help the Pilots improve to 2-2-0 overall and 1-2-0 in WCC play. The Tigers fall to 0-4-2 and 0-2-1 in league play.
Pilot senior goalkeeper Madison Zamora made her season debut between the pipes and made three saves to earn her second career shutout.
Ries provided the game-winner late in the first half. Freshman forward Nedya Sewan created the chance with crafty play in the left corner. She bent a right-footed cross between two defenders to the near post and Ries took it off one bounce and flicked it into the right side netting.
Ries then converted a penalty in the 58th minute to double the score. The PK was awarded after a great combination play down the left side between Emily Collier and Ellie Walker. Collier found Walker in space down the left sideline and made a strong run into the left side of the penalty area. Walker slotted a pass to Collier who took a touch before a Pacific defender made contact and brought her down just outside the goal box.
Ries has now converted both her PK attempts this season and is 8-for-9 from the spot in her career. She increased her career goals total to 29 and moved into 17th place on the Portland career charts.
Portland had an 8-5 advantage in shots and 8-4 margin in corner kicks for the game.
The Pilots will continue WCC play next week with a road match at San Francisco on Saturday at 1 p.m.
