PORTLAND, Ore. – The University of Portland's men's tennis team is back home at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center for their final home WCC matches of the season against the No. 31 Pepperdine Waves and the Loyola Marymount Lions. The Pilots will play the Waves on Friday, Apr. 16 at 11 a.m. and the Lions on Sunday, Apr. 18 at 10 a.m. Live stats and video will be available at PortlandPilots.com.
Portland is 8-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play after being picked to finish seventh in the WCC this preseason. In their most recent bout of matches, the Pilots traveled to the Bay Area for weekend matches against the San Francisco Dons and the Santa Clara Broncos and came out winless. They fell to the Dons 4-2 in difficult weather conditions and lost to the Broncos 5-2.
The Waves are 11-5 this season and 4-0 in conference play. They are currently ranked No. 31 in the nation and were picked to finish first in the WCC. Pepperdine has one player ranked in singles in No. 80 Adrian Oetzbach and one doubles duo ranked 82
nd in the nation in Oetzbach and Guy Den Ouden. They have played seven ranked opponents this season, going 3-4 in those matches. Most recently, the Waves swept the Saint Mary's Gaels 4-0 on Apr. 9 and Loyola Marymount 5-0 on Apr. 11.
Pepperdine holds the edge in the all-time series against Portland with a 10-3 record. All of Portland's wins against Pepperdine have come since 2015. The last time these two teams played, however, Pepperdine came out on top with a 5-2 victory in Portland.
Loyola Marymount, meanwhile, is 6-7 on the season with a 3-1 record in WCC play. They were picked to finish fourth in the conference. In their most weekend with matches, the Lions beat Saint Mary's 4-1 on Apr. 10 but fell to Pepperdine 5-0 on Apr. 11. They will play Gonzaga on Friday, Apr. 16 before coming to Portland.
The Pilots have the lead in the all-time series against LMU with an 11-8 record. Portland has beaten the Lions in six of the last seven contests, with their most recent meeting being a 5-0 win in Portland.
The Pilots will play their regular season finale in Moraga, Calif. where they will match up against Saint Mary's. The two teams will play Saturday, Apr. 24 at 2 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stat and video options.
