PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots women's tennis team is back home for their final two matches of the season against the Pacific Tigers and the Saint Mary's Gaels. Portland will play Pacific on Friday, Apr. 23 at 11 a.m. and Saint Mary's on Saturday, Apr. 24 at 10:30 a.m. Live stats and video will be available at PortlandPilots.com.
The Pilots are 2-11 this season and 1-5 in conference play. The squad is young, with six underclassmen on the team. All six underclassmen have made appearances in matches this season. Portland's only conference win came on Apr. 10 in a 5-2 victory over the Santa Clara Broncos. Most recently, the Pilots fell to the No. 7 Pepperdine Waves 7-0 in Malibu, Calif.
The Tigers are 4-10 on the season and 1-5 in WCC play. That puts them at seventh in the in the conference, which is also where they were picked to finish in the WCC preseason poll. They played Portland's opponent for Saturday – Saint Mary's – in their most recent match and fell 6-1. Their only conference win is also against Santa Clara.
Saint Mary's, meanwhile, is 5-7 on the season and 3-3 in conference play. That record puts them one spot above Pacific at sixth in the conference, two spots below their projected finish in the WCC preseason poll. They have played four ranked opponents this season, losing to all of them. They will play the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Friday before coming to Portland.
With no WCC Tournament this season, the Saint Mary's match marks the final spring match of 2021 for the women's team. The outright regular-season winner for the WCC will automatically qualify for the NCAA tournament.
