PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots (11-3, 1-1 WCC) put together a dazzling fourth-quarter comeback to defeat the San Francisco Dons (6-9, 0-3 WCC) 65-60. The win is the first in WCC play for the Pilots.
Alex Fowler led all scorers with 18 points on the night along with eight boards on 9-of-11 shooting. This is the 12
th time she has led the Pilots in scoring this year. Emme Shearer also put together another solid night, with 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Her 16 points was just one shy of a career-high. Haylee Andrews rounds out the double-digit scorers with 12 points along with nine rebounds and five assists.
Several Pilots had staunch defensive nights for Portland. Lucy Cochrane once again controlled the paint defensively with five blocks as well as10 rebounds. It's her fourth game with at least five blocks. Andrews also added five steals, with three of those coming in the fourth quarter.
Claudia Langarita was the leading scorer for the Dons with 18 points on the night. The Pilots held the Dons to under 40% shooting from the field overall and to just 17% (3-of-18) from three.
The Pilots started strong and took a two-point lead after the first quarter. Unfortunately for Portland, they hit a scoring drought and gave up a 12-2 run in the second quarter that put them down by double digits. The Pilots only scored five points in the quarter but managed to keep the Dons in check, trailing 28-21 at the half.
The Dons put together another strong quarter in the third and managed to push their lead to double digits again, but a clutch layup from Haylee Andrews at the end of the quarter cut San Francisco's lead to single digits. That gave Portland some momentum heading into the final 10 minutes.
The fourth quarter was all Pilots. Spearheaded by impressive defense from the likes of Shearer and Andrews and some timely scoring, the Pilots sparked a furious comeback. A layup from Fowler with just over five minutes to play gave Portland the lead, and they never looked back. The Pilots made 69% of their shots in the fourth – their highest field-goal percentage in a quarter this season – and 60% of their shots in the half and took this game 65-60.
The Pilots were under their average number of steals with only eight on the night, but seven of those came in the second half and all of them at the most important times. The Pilots also outrebounded the Dons 38-30 and outscored the Dons in the paint 44-38. They also added 17 assists on the night.
