SPOKANE, Wash. – The Portland Pilots (11-4, 1-2 WCC) and the Gonzaga Bulldogs (13-4, 4-0 WCC) battled at the McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane, Wash., but the Zags ultimately came out on top 68-59 to sweep the season series.
Alex Fowler was the leading scorer for the Pilots with 19 points along with six rebounds. It's her 13
th game as the leading scorer for Portland. Lucy Cochrane and Haylee Andrews were the only other Pilots to score in double digits, getting 13 and 10 respectively.
Kayleigh Truoung and Cierra Walker were the leading scorers for the Zags with 13 points each. Truong also added five assists on the night. Melody Kempton also had 10 points on the night along with seven rebounds.
The first half started slow for the Pilots as the Zags rushed out to a 16-4 lead early in the first quarter. Portland clawed their way back though and managed to cut Gonzaga's lead to four after one quarter. The Pilots were stout defensively in the second quarter and Alex Fowler was dominant in the paint as she scored 15 first-half points to bring Portland within one.
The Pilots and Bulldogs kept pace with one another for most of the third quarter, but Portland had the momentum and took an early lead in the third. But the Zags were resilient and took the lead late in the third against the Pilots.
The fourth quarter saw Zags put the pressure on the Pilots, but Portland kept pace no matter what. Andrews hit a three with just over four minutes left to bring it within two. A long scoring drought followed for both sides until Walker hit a big three for the Zags to put them up five with two-and-a-half minutes left. The Pilots couldn't close the gap from there and eventually fell 68-59.
The Pilots had a solid shooting night at 49% from the field, but Gonzaga shot just a bit better. While the Bulldogs hit only 43% of their shots overall, they hit 42% of their shots from outside and 88% of their free throws. Gonzaga also got 21 points from their bench tonight.
The Bulldogs also didn't let the Pilots dominate inside as they usually do. Portland outscored the Zags 26-18 in points in the paint, but also were outrebounded 31-25 by Gonzaga. The Bulldogs also had four blocks and nine steals against the Pilots.
Next up, the Portland Pilots will return to the Chiles Center for their matchup against the Santa Clara Broncos. The two teams will face off on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 2 pm., with the game set to broadcast on Portland's CW. Check PortlandPilots.com as well for a stream and live stats.
