STANFORD, Calif. – Sema Pankin won both of his doubles matches on Friday to advance to the quarterfinals of the ITA Northwest Super Regional hosted at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
Pankin defeated Ryan Torres of UC Davis in the opening round and then knocked off Gonzaga's Sasha Trkulja in the Round of 16, both in straight sets. He will face Ran Amar of Pacific in Saturday's quarterfinals.
Eleftherios Neos won his opening round singles match over Nevada's Matheo Coupu 6-3, 7-6, before falling to No. 74 Joshua Charlton of Oregon in the second round.
"I don't think we got style points today, but we did a good job winning three of our four matches," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "Lefty had a nice win this morning but ran into a buzz saw in the afternoon. Sema still has a little higher level that he can call on which he will probably need as the tournament goes on, but a good effort to get through two solid opponents today."
Pankin and Neos, ranked No. 10 nationally preseason for doubles, are the No. 2 seed in the doubles draw which begins on Saturday morning and will face a tandem from Oregon in the Round of 16. Fellow Pilots Nikolas Tvedt and Nicolas Ocana qualified in doubles as well and will take on the No. 3-seeded team Stanford on Saturday.
The tournament continues through the weekend with championship matches scheduled for Monday.
