LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Portland men's tennis dominated the doubles draw with three of the four semifinal teams, while Sema Pankin advanced to the singles title match Saturday at the
Southern California Intercollegiate Championships. Pankin and teammate Eleftherios Neos will also compete for the doubles title, with championship matches scheduled for Sunday.
The Pilots took three quarterfinals doubles matches to open the day. Oscar Brown and Nikolas Tvedt stunned the top-seeded tandem from USC by an 8-2 margin. Freshman Cade Fernando and senior Issa Yoshida cruised to an 8-4 win against Cal Lutheran, while Pankin and Neos, the draw's two-seed, defeated a tough Cal Poly team in a tiebreaker.
Brown and Tvedt ran out of steam in an 8-4 loss to Luka Mrsic and Pablo Masjuan of UC Santa Barbara, while Pankin and Neos beat teammates Fernando and Yoshida in the other semifinal, 8-3.
Pankin carried the momentum into his afternoon singles match against No. 44-ranked Bradley Frye of host USC. After dropping the opening set Pankin dominated the rest of the way for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory.
"We had a great day today," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "We continued our good run in doubles with three in the semifinals and Lefty and Sema into the title match. Sema had a great come-from-behind win to put himself in a singles final tomorrow. Beating the No. 44 player in the country on his home court after losing the first set was impressive. It was a great gut check for him. He has worked hard and it's great to see him reaping the benefits. We also had several other guys battle into the late afternoon picking up some comeback wins in the consolation matches."
Pankin, the singles No. 2 seed, will take on top-seeded and No. 67-ranked Phillip Jordan of UCSB for the singles title. The Pankin-Neos tandem meets Mrsic and Masjuan of the Gauchos for the doubles championship. Live video coverage of the matches is available via
