University Place, Wash. -- Laura Pellicoro earned All-West Region honors (Top-25 overall), finishing second. This was the highest finish for a woman in Pilot history at the NCAA West Regional Championships. The Pilot women finished 9th overall with 292 points, while the entirety of the team also ran PRs for the 6K distance.
Pellicoro ran near the front of the pack for nearly the entire race, sitting on the shoulders of other top runners in the field while biding her time. Throughout the last split, Pellicoro would pick off four runners in order to finish second in a time of 19:21.8.
Pellicoro was followed by Courtney Klatt in 34th (20:00.3) and Mie Nielsen in 76th (20:37.4). Both runners maneuvered their way through the field throughout the entirety of the race. Each runner passed 18 and 25 runners throughout the race, respectively, to finish as the second and third Pilot finishers.
Claire Fagan finished soon after Nielsen in 83rd (20:42.4). Fagan passed the most people of any Pilot during the race with a total of 38. She helped drag along the Pilots' final scorer, Phoebe McKnight, who finished in 97th (20:55.0). McKnight followed closely behind Fagan, passing a total of 18 runners before ultimately finishing in 97th. Their finishes kept the Pilot women's spread to 1:33.2.
Other runners for Portland were Sam Prusse and Teresa Perez who finished in 109th (21:01.7)and 112th (21:06.4), respectively.
The Pilots now await the 2022 cross country championship selections, which will be announced tomorrow, Saturday, November 12th, beginning at 2 p.m. (PT)
