EUGENE, Ore. – The Portland men's tennis team began the final event of the fall with a strong opening day Friday at the Duck Invite at the Student Tennis Center. The Pilots took four of five singles matches from host Oregon and split a pair of doubles matches against the Ducks.
Freshmen Fabian Gusic and Cade Fernando both had strong days with singles win and then teaming up for an 8-4 doubles victory over Luke Vandecasteele and Avi Shugar. Gusic beat Shugar in straight sets in singles, while Fernando posted a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 win against Russell Soohoo in singles.
Nikolas Tvedt knocked off Vandecasteele in three sets in singles, while Oscar Brown recorded a straight sets win over August Gustafson for Portland's other singles victory.
"Today was a great start to the last weekend of the fall," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "The freshmen really led the way today. Cade and Fabian played great doubles to get us started and then they both got singles victories. I think we competed really well against the Ducks on their home court. Tvedt and Fernando both faced opponents who served for the match against them in the third set and both flipped them into wins. Fabian and Oscar both played clean singles matches against solid players. I'm really happy with some toughness we showed today."
The Duck invite continues with the Pilots facing off against opponents from Portland State on Saturday and then Washington on Sunday.
