SAN MATEO, Calif. – The Portland Pilots had several players earn distinction from the West Coast Conference, with Brandon Cambridge being named the WCC Offensive Player of the Year and George Tasouris being named the WCC Co-Goalkeeper of the Year. Cambridge is the first Pilot to win the award while Tasouris is the first to win his award since Paul Christensen in 2017.
Along with these honors, Cambridge made the All-WCC First Team along with midfielder Nick Fernandez and defender Delentz Pierre. Defender Kevin Bonilla made the All-WCC Second Team, midfielders Jake Arteaga and Sebastian Nava along with forwards Gurman Sangha and CJ Tibbling along with Tasouris earned honorable mention while Muslim Umar and Oliver Jeppe made the all-freshman team.
Cambridge was impressive all season long, scoring 12 goals with six assists to notch 30 points on the year. That's 13 more points than the next closes WCC player, ranking sixth in the country. He was also seventh in the country in goals. No Pilot has scored as many points as him since 2012 or as many goals as him since 2013. It's the second time he's earned All-WCC honors.
Tasouris was goalkeeper of the year after earning allowing the fewest goals per match in the WCC at 1.023. This is the second time that Tasouris has earned All-WCC recognition in as many years, having made the second team last year.
Fernandez was a critical part of the midfield for the Pilots' attack, cobbling together seven assists and notching a goal as well. His seven assists ranked tied for second in the WCC. This is the second time Fernandez has earned All-WCC honors for his play, having made the second team back in the spring 2021 season.
Defensively, Pierre and Bonilla were critical in helping the Pilots earn eight shutouts on the year. Offensively, Pierre also added a goal off a header against Seton Hall while Bonilla added a goal and an assist in a more defensive role this season. This is the third time Pierre has earned All-WCC honors and the first time Bonilla has done so.
Nava was one of the top scorers in the WCC, putting up four goals and nine assists on the season. His nine assists ranks 14
th nationally and is first in the WCC. His goal against the Gonzaga Bulldogs was a game-winning goal as well. This is his second time having made an All-WCC team, earning honorable mention while making the freshman team as well.
Tibbling dazzled offensively in his lone year with the Pilots. The former All-American scored seven goals with two assists, good for second on the team and tied for second in the WCC. He also scored four goals against Utah Tech, the most by a Pilot since Connor Casey scored five against Gonzaga in 1999.
Sangha earned honorable mention in his final year with Portland after scoring five goals and adding six assists as well. He was the first Pilot in five years to earn at least three assists in a match earlier this year when he did so against Indiana. He was also tied for second in the WCC in points with 16. This is his first WCC honor.
Finally, rounding out the freshman team, Jeppe was a key player in both the midfield and defensively while Umar dazzled in his minutes, scoring three goals and adding one assist. Both players played in 17 matches.
The Pilots had a stellar regular season, going 12-2-3 and 6-1 in WCC play. They finished second in the WCC, which is their highest finish since 2016 when they won the conference. They were first in several offensive categories in the conference and nationally ranked third in scoring offense (2.71) and points per game (8.24), fifth in goal differential (29), seventh in points (140) and goals (46) and 10
th in total assists (48). Their 46 goals are the most by a Pilot team since 1999.
Portland is hosting a first-round match in the NCAA Tournament for the third time in four fall seasons, welcoming the UC Riverside Highlanders to The Bluff. The two teams play on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for links to the ESPN+ stream and live stats.
