CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots scored two late goals in Corvallis to take down the Oregon State Beavers 2-0 and extend their run in the NCAA Tournament. Portland improved to 14-2-3 on the season after the victory and will now play in the third round of the tournament.
How it Happened
- After a scoreless first half, Portland started the scoring when Jacob Babalai notched his eighth goal of the season in the 78th minute, assisted by Brandon Cambridge.
- The Pilots increased their lead to 2-0 on a goal from Muslim Umar -- his fourth goal of the season -- in the 89th minute after Umar snatched the ball in the final third of the field.
Game Notes
- The Pilots advance to the third round of the tournament for the first time since 2009 and the fifth time in program history.
- Portland also won a playoff match by multiple goals for the first time since they did so 5-3 against Washington in 2004.
- Babalai now has eight goals on the year, the second most on the Pilots. He also becomes the second Pilot this season to eclipse the 20-point mark.
- Cambridge, the other Pilot to hit that threshold, moves to 31 points on the year with the assist on Babalai's goal. It's still the most since Steven Evans had the same total in 2012.
- With an even 50 goals on the year, the Pilots have scored the most goals in a season for a Pilot squad since 1995. They are the 10th Pilot team to eclipse 50 goals in a year.
- At 51 assists this year, they are two away from tying the program record for assists in a year.
- Portland's 14 wins are the best by a Pilot squad since 1995. They currently boast the highest winning percentage (.816) of a Pilot team since 1988.
- This is the first time the Pilots will host a game beyond the second round.
Portland Head Coach Nick Carlin-Voigt on the win
"Really proud of our entire program for winning tonight and advancing to the Sweet 16. Our players have worked so hard over the years, and I couldn't be more excited for them to advance. We knew we would have to earn this result.Â
We had a tremendous response coming out of halftime and really turned the momentum back in our favor and started to gain control. We wanted to press and we take a lot of pride in our collective pressure. Credit to OSU as they are a good team, and this game is always exciting. First half was cagey and we felt we could make a few tweaks in the second half to unlock our attack and get more pressure on the ball and more numbers centrally.Â
Our guys have believed all year and grew stronger as the game went on. You could feel it was going to be Portland in the second half. Thrilled for our University community, fans, alumni and most importantly the guys in our locker as we get to host a Sweet 16 game at Merlo on Saturday. We are exited we get to spend another week together as a family and opportunity to keep improving and growing. This group of players loves playing for each other, and that's been the most rewarding part is when you see and feel that collective spirit of brotherhood. We will enjoy this one tonight and then start preparing for a very good Western Michigan team. Thank you to all of our fans who drove down to support us and we need everyone back at Merlo Saturday at 5 p.m.!"
