PORTLAND, Ore --The Portland Pilots (5-3) stunted the Evergreen State Geoducks 87-35 in their return to the Chiles Center. The Pilots had four players score in double figures, led by Alex Fowler, who had 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Maisie Burnham tacked on 14 points and Kelsey Lenzie helped out with 12 points off the bench.
Portland outrebounded Evergreen State 39-30 in Wednesday's game, led by Fowler's six boards. The Pilots also collected 15 offensive rebounds and scored 11 second chance points.
The Portland defense held Evergreen State shooters to just 33.3% from the field, including 9.1% from three-point range. The Geoducks did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only seven offensive rebounds and scored eight second chance points while Portland pulled down 24 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 5-2 advantage, Portland went on a 7-0 run with 7:25 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from McKelle Meek, to increase its lead to 12-2. The Pilots then added eight points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 26-8 advantage. Portland did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 16 of its 26 points close to the basket.
Portland kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 16-0 run starting at the 7:19 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 45-13. The Pilots kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 47-15 advantage heading into halftime. Portland dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 21 points in the quarter inside.
Portland continued after the break with a 13-0 run, punctuated by a three from Lenzie, to expand its lead further to 60-18 with 7:19 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Pilots added three points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 73-28 edge. Portland knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 26 total points.
Portland kept widening that lead, expanding it to 81-35 before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 87-35 with 1:40 to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Portland took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.
