PORTLAND, Ore. – Tyler Robertson scored his 1,000th career point early in the second half and then broke the Portland single-game assists record to lead the Pilots over New Orleans 100-61 Saturday night at Chiles Center.
Robertson scored 15 points and dished out 15 assists, breaking the previous mark of 14 established by Dionn Holton versus Southern Oregon on Dec. 9, 1995. The Melbourne, Australia native entered the game as one of just two players in the nation to average at least 16 points, six rebounds and six assists per game.
The Pilots (8-5) also tied a team record for three-pointers made after going 18-for-35, including a school record 13 triples in the first half alone.
Five players score in double figures for Portland, led by Moses Wood, who had 21 points and six rebounds. Kristian Sjolund tacked on 18 points and two steals, while Vasilije Vucinic had 14 points and nine rebounds and Juanse Gorosito added 13 off the bench.
The Portland offense was firing on all cylinders in recording a season high 100 points and shooting 55 percent from the field. The Pilot defense held New Orleans shooters to only 34.8 percent from the field.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 23-17 advantage, Portland went on an 11-0 run with 8:43 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Robertson, to increase its lead to 34-17. The Pilots then added six points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 54-31 advantage. Portland relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down 13 shots to account for 39 of its 54 points.
Following intermission, Portland kept widening that lead, expanding it to 72-48 before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Sjolund's three, to grow the lead to 81-48 with 8:55 to go in the contest. The Pilots kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 100-61 win. Portland got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 16 of its 46 total points.
