PORTLAND, Ore. -- Haylee Andrews put up a near triple-double as the Portland Pilots (8-5) blasted the BYU Cougars 67-45.
The Pilots (8-5, 2-0) had three players score in double figures, led by Alex Fowler, who had 18 points, seven rebounds and six steals. Haylee Andrews added 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists and Maisie Burnham chipped in as well with 12 points.
Led by Liana Kaitu'u's three offensive rebounds, Portland did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in nine second chance points.
Portland's defense held BYU to only 31 percent shooting from the field, including 22.2 percent from beyond the arc. The Pilots also limited Lauren Gustin to 1-of-12 shooting and seven points in the game.
How It Happened
After falling behind 6-4, Portland went on a 9-0 run with 4:34 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Fowler, to take a 13-6 lead. The Pilots then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 14-10 advantage. Portland did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 14 points close to the basket.
Portland kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 9:02 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Keeley Frawley, to increase its lead to 20-13. The Pilots proceeded to add to that lead and enjoyed a 32-21 advantage heading into halftime. Portland dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 18 points inside.
The Pilots continued enjoyed an 8-0 run in the third, punctuated by a three from Burnham, to expand its lead further to 40-23 with 5:26 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Pilots added four points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 52-31 edge.
Portland went on a 6-0 run and grew the lead to 60-35 with 7:53 to go in the contest. The Cougars narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Pilots still cruised the rest of the way for the 67-45 win. Portland fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 15 points.
