LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Alex Fowler scored 24 points and Haylee Andrews added 23 as the Portland Pilots (9-5, 3-0) took down the Loyola Marymount Lions 70-61 on the road Thursday.
Fowler and Andrews' stellar scoring performances led the Pilots in the contest. Fowler tacked on five rebounds and five assists and Andrews added five rebounds and nine assists. Emme Shearer also helped out with seven points and three steals.
Portland forced 19 LMU turnovers and turned those takeaways into 21 points on the offensive end of the floor. Shearer's three steals led the way for Portland.
How It Happened
Portland started off strong, putting together an 11-8 lead heading into the second quarter. Portland did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 11 points close to the basket.
Portland built that first quarter lead to 15-11 before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 7:00 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 23-11. The Pilots enjoyed a 34-20 advantage heading into halftime. Portland dominated in the paint, scoring 20 of its 23 points close to the basket.
Following the intermission, Portland continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 47-32 before going on a 5-0 run to expand its lead further to 52-32 with 3:01 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Lions had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Pilots still entered the fourth quarter with a 53-42 edge.
Portland kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Keeley Frawley's three, to grow the lead to 63-52 with 4:38 to go in the contest. The Lions narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Pilots still cruised the rest of the way for the 70-61 win.
