PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots baseball team has announced their schedule for the 2023 spring season. The schedule features matchups against high-level Power 5 schools, a College World Series team and stout conference competition.
"We're looking to build on the momentum and excitement we generated in 2022, where we finished in the top 100 nationally in RPI, had 32 wins, finished second in the West Coast Conference standings and earned a berth to the WCC postseason tournament for the first time in program history," Loomis said. "To do that, we'll need to again play high-quality non-conference games throughout the season. We look forward to that challenge. I feel like we've accomplished that with this 2023 schedule."
The Pilots start the year on the road for their first seven games, beginning with a four-game series against Utah Tech in St. George from Feb. 17-19, including a doubleheader on Feb. 18. After that, they'll head to College Station to take on the Texas A&M Aggies for three games from Feb. 24-26. The Aggies were a NCAA Tournament team last season, going 44-20 overall and advancing to the College World Series semifinal, the furthest they've made it in program history.
The Bluff Boys will be back in Portland after that for a 13-game homestand, starting with a four-game series against the Utah Valley Wolverines. Those two teams will play from March 3-5 with a doubleheader on March 4. They'll host the Washington Huskies soon after for the first game of a home-and-home on March 7. The Huskies went 30-26 last season and split their series against the Pilots last year, dropping their match at Husky Ballpark but beating the Pilots at Joe Etzel Field.
Portland hosts the Niagara Purple Eagles for the first time in school history for a four-game series spanning from March 10-13 before hosting the Oregon Ducks on March 14 in their first of two games this season. The Ducks went 36-25 and qualified for NCAA Regional, falling in the opening round. The Duck game is also the final before the start of conference play.
The first West Coast Conference series is a home series against the Pepperdine Waves, a three-game showdown from March 17-19. The Waves finished just outside of the top six of the WCC last season at 24-26 overall and 12-15 in conference play. After that series, the Pilots are back on the road, heading to Goss Stadium to take on the Oregon State Beavers on March 21. The Beavers are a national powerhouse that went 48-18 overall last year and swept the Pilots in their two games last season. The game is one of three between the Pilots and the Beavers.
The Pilots will stay on the road for the next eight games, starting against the Pacific Tigers for their second WCC series of the season from March 24-26. The Pilots have swept the Tigers in each of the last two series. Afterwards, the Pilots will play their final game of the year against Washington (March 28) before heading to Moraga for a conference series against the Saint Mary's Gaels between March 31 and April 2. The Gaels went 25-30 overall last season and were swept by the Pilots in their final WCC series.
After a trip to Eugene on April 4 to take on the Ducks, the Pilots finally return home for a quick three-game series against the Loyola Marymount Lions from April 6-8. The Pilots dropped their series against the Lions last season, but got their revenge in the WCC Tournament with a 10-2 victory over LMU to advance to the semifinals. The Lions were just 20-34-1 last season but went 14-13 in WCC play to make the tournament.
The Pilots are back on the road for their one game against the Seattle U Redhawks on April 11, who took the series last year but went just 16-34 overall. Following that, the Pilots take on San Diego, who went 37-20 on the year and won the WCC Tournament win to earn their ninth bid to the NCAA Regional. The two teams play in San Diego from April 14-16.
The Redhawks come to Portland for the final game between the two teams on April 11. After that, they'll host the Gonzaga Bulldogs from April 21-23. The Bulldogs were the only other team to make the NCAA Regional, going 37-19 and finishing atop the regular season WCC standings to make the regional. They fell to Columbia in Blacksburg.
As the season winds down, the Pilots will head to Provo, Utah from April 27-29 for a three-game series against the BYU Cougars. BYU made the WCC Tournament last season after finishing 33-21 and 16-12 in WCC play, but were knocked out in the first game of the tournament by LMU. The Pilots will play the Oregon State Beavers in their first of two games in the month of May, playing the Beavers on May 9 at Ron Tonkin Field.
The Pilots host the Santa Clara Broncos from May 12-14, a team that went 24-29 last season, for their final home WCC series before hosting the Beavers once again on May 16 in their final home game of the year. Portland finishes the season on the road against the San Francisco Dons from May 18-20. The Dons were 28-29 last year and 14-13 in WCC play, narrowly making the tournament and falling in the first round to the Toreros. If the Pilots qualify, the WCC Tournament will take place from May 25-28 at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, Calif.
The Pilots are coming off one of the most successful seasons in program history, going 32-23 overall with a 17-10 record in WCC play, their best conference record ever and their best overall finish since 2010. They finished second in the WCC – their highest regular season finish ever – and earned a berth to the WCC tournament for the first time ever, finishing third.
