SEATTLE, Wash.---Veerle Bakker claimed a new school record of 9:11.90 in the women's 3000 meter run at the UW Husky Classic held in Dempsey Indoor on Friday evening, overtaking the previous record of 9:12.16 set by Lauren LaRocco back in 2017. Bakker finished in 11th-place overall on the night.
Jacob Klemz then posted the second-best all-time program finish in the men's 3000m, clocking in at 7:51.95 to secure ninth individually in the race. Riley Osen collected the ninth-place Portland all-time finish with a new personal best of 7:57.82, garnering 16th overall. Chris Anderson finished with a PR of 8:16.35 to take 50th-place, and Cameron Thompson earned 64th with a new personal record of 8:25.94. Justin Hazell's 8:44.97 placed him 78th.
Making their Pilot debuts in the women's 5000m, Claire Fagan locked in the ninth-best program finish with a time of 16:32.08—good for 24th-place at the meet—and Mie Nielsen landed in 45th-place overall at 17:02.98.
"Everyone ran great today!" said women's head coach Ian Solof. "Three PRs and a school record for Veerle. I was really happy with the way all three of them competed, very smart and very tough."
In the men's 5000 meter run, Jona Bodirsky produced a time of 14:17.56 to take 42nd overall, and John Kavulich registered a new personal best of 14:35.42 to finish in 54th.
"Another great day for us, definitely highlighted by Klemz's 7:51 and Riley's 7:57!" said men's head coach Rob Conner. "We were really impressed with Jona Bodirsky's debut in a Pilot uniform. He has only been here a month and lopped :31 off his personal best in the 5000! Just awesome!"
The Pilots return for day two of the UW Husky Classic tomorrow, Saturday, February 12th, with Bakker, Ellie Erikson, and Laura Pellicoro up first for Portland in the women's mile run, set to begin at 12:40 p.m.
