SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The San Francisco Dons (14-13, 8-7 WCC) pulled away from the Portland Pilots (16-7, 6-5 WCC) at the end of the fourth to take one from the Pilots 80-72. The loss for the Pilots means the series is split for the year.
Alex Fowler put up big numbers once again for the Pilots with 14 points and 12 rebounds. That's her fourth double-double of the season. Maisie Burnham had another stellar night off the bench with 24 points – the most of any Pilot – while MJ Bruno had a career-high nine points off the bench. Burnham's point total was a season-high for her and just one point shy of a career-high.
Lucy Cochrane added to what's already been a stellar defensive season with another eight-block game. This is her seventh game with five blocks or more and her fourth with eight blocks or more. She currently sits at 82blocks on the year, which is firmly second in program history for Pilots who only played Division I basketball and third for all Pilots. Cochrane also racked up the boards with 13. Cochrane is 15 blocks away from tying the school record.
Ioanna Krimili led the way for the Dons with a career-high 38 points. Claudia Langarita added 15 of her own Kennedie Dickie had 11.
The Pilots started well, but struggled to contain San Francisco's Krimili. Last year's leading scorer in the WCC was hot in the first half, putting up 20 points on the Pilots. Portland managed to keep pace with the Dons, scoring big as well, but San Francisco held a four-point lead at 42-38 through the first half of this one.
The third quarter saw the Dons race out to a big lead only for the Pilots to surge back. They put together an 11-2 run at the end of the third to take a one-point lead with one quarter to play. The two teams traded blows until late miscues crept up on the Pilots. With an almost three-minute scoring drought towards end the game and a 14-2 run for USF in the final five minutes, some late threes from Burnham couldn't save Portland as they fell 80-72.
The Pilots outrebounded the Dons 48-30 and got 18 second-chance points. They also had a strong contribution from their bench for the fourth game in a row, with 41 points off the pine. The Pilots also had 18 assists.
San Francisco's ability to capitalize off Portland's turnovers proved to be crucial. The Pilots had 20 turnovers on the night, with the Dons scoring 17 points off those opportunities. Meanwhile, the Pilots only forced two steals and seven turnovers overall, well under their season average of almost 12 steals a contest.
The Pilots' road trip continues with a sojourn to Santa Clara for a matchup against the Broncos. The two teams will play on Saturday at 2 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video options.
