Colorado Edges Pilots in Women’s Tennis

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland dropped a close 4-2 non-conference women's tennis match to visiting Colorado Saturday morning at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center. The Pilots secured the early doubles point and Iva Zelic continued her strong play with a singles win at the top of the lineup to account for Portland's scoring.

Zelic partnered with Neli Sunjic at No. 1 doubles and cruised to a 6-3 win to set the tone. Sally Pethybridge and Rimona Rouf then pulled out a 7-5 comeback win at No. 2 doubles to clinch the point. Pethybridge and Rouf have now gone 3-1 as a tandem during the dual season.

Zelic knocked off Caroline Pozo by a 6-4, 6-2 margin at the top of the singles lineup to improve to 4-1 in dual matches this Spring.

The Buffalos picked up wins at the No. 2-4 positions to go ahead 3-2 in the team scoring. The final two matches featured Rouf at No. 5 singles for the Pilots and Jana Tanevska at No. 6.

Rouf was a set up on Betina Tokac and battling in a second set tiebreaker when Ky Ecton secured the overall win by edging Tanevska by a 6-4, 6-4 margin.

The Pilots will hit the road next week for a pair of matches in Missoula, Mont. Portland visits the host Montana Grizzlies on Friday at 9 a.m. and then take on Utah State in a Saturday neutral site match. Both contests will be played at Peak Racquet Club.
