SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara Broncos erupted in the second half to pull away from Portland for a 102-89 victory Saturday afternoon in West Coast Conference action at the Leavey Center. The Pilots conclude the regular season with a 17-13 overall record and 7-7 WCC mark as they prepare for next week's WCC Tournament.
Moses Wood scored a team-high 23 points and added seven rebounds and four assists to lead the way for Portland. Chris Austin added 18 points, while Chika Nduka matched his career high with 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Tyler Robertson and Kristian Sjolund added 16 and 11 points, respectively.
Josip Vrankic had a memorable Senior Night for the Broncos (20-10, 10-5 WCC) and finished with 30 points on 11-of-16 from the field. PJ Pipes added 23 points, while Jalen Williams filled the stat sheet with 16 points, six rebounds and nine assists.
Santa Clara drilled 14-of-25 three-pointers, shot 60 percent overall from the field and knocked down 16-of-19 free throws. Portland finished at 51 percent overall, but converted just 7-of-18 from three-point range.
It was a shootout from the opening tip as the game was played at a furious pace. The Pilots led by five points late in the first half after holding Santa Clara scoreless for more than six minutes, but the Broncos took a 41-40 lead into halftime.
Robertson picked up his fourth foul early in the second half and the Broncos took advantage and pushed ahead to a 59-52 margin. Justice hit a three-pointer and Vrankic converted a three-point play for a 72-61 lead, but Robertson came back soon after and following a Wood three made a transition layup to cut it to 74-68.
Santa Clara scored on the next seven possessions to extend the lead to 15 points and put the game out of reach.
Portland and the rest of the WCC will now await the official final WCC standings and conference tournament seeds to be announced. With the unbalanced schedule, the league will use a Ken Pomeroy Adjusted Win Percentage model to determine official standings. The University Credit Union WCC Tournament will be held March 3-8 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
