PORTLAND, Ore. – The Loyola Marymount Lions (8-12, 3-7 WCC) roared back against the Portland Pilots (14-5, 4-3 WCC) in the second half to win at the Chiles Center 61-59. A last-second shot from Jasmine Jones proved to be the dagger.
Alex Fowler led the Pilots in scoring once again with 21 points. It was her fourth game in a row with at least 20 points and her seventh total this season. Fowler also moved to ninth all-time in career points in program history, now sitting at 1,382. Rose Pflug once again scored in double digits with 13 and four assists while Maddie Muhlheim scored a season-high 12 points with four threes.
Ariel Johnson led the way for the Lions with 19 points. The Lions shot 59.6% from the floor, but did not make any of their three-point attempts.
The first half was all Pilots most of the way. They took an early lead and didn't look back for the entirety of the first 20 minutes. They made 54.2% of their shots from the field and 41.7% of their threes and led 34-22 at half, with Fowler and Muhlheim putting up nine each.
The third quarter saw the Pilots give ground to the Lions. Portland made only 27% of their shots in the quarter, letting LMU close the gap to five. In the fourth quarter, the Lions attacked the middle of Portland's usually stout zone defense and took the lead with just over five minutes left in the game.
Both teams traded makes for the rest of the quarter, with the game tied with 43 seconds left after a jumper from Johnson. The Pilots got off two shots on the other end thanks to strong rebounding from Lucy Cochrane, but Portland couldn't get the ball in the hoop. The Lions took it down the other end and drained the shot with 1.4 seconds remaining. The final inbound pass from the Pilots was deflected, leading to a tough loss for Portland.
LMU's dominance inside proved to be a major difference in this one. They outrebounded the Pilots 32-22 and scored 40 of their 61 points in the paint.
Portland did do well forcing turnovers against the Lions. They forced 23 turnovers by the Lions with 11 steals. They scored 23 points off those turnovers as well. Unfortunately, the Lions overcame their ball-security issues to eke out the win.
The Pilots and Lions will meet again on Monday with a 2 p.m. matchup at the Chiles Center. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and streaming options.
